This is the third project that I’ve had Portland Metro Electric do at my home. The projects ranged from a 2-hour task for one electrician to the recent one which was all day for 4 electricians. Each time they do good work with a pleasant attitude and reasonable pricing. I recommend them.Posted on Google Sergey PoltavskiyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Whatever Your Home's Electrical Problem Is, Start Here
Your breaker trips every time the microwave and toaster run together. Half the outlets in your 1940s bungalow are two-prong and ungrounded. You’re gutting the kitchen and the contractor just told you the wiring won’t pass inspection. Or you just want recessed lighting, a ceiling fan, and dimmers that actually work.
Portland Metro Electric handles all of it, from single-fixture installs to whole-home rewiring during a remodel. Our electricians completed five-year apprenticeships, our vans arrive stocked, and for most projects we can give you a minimum and maximum price on the first phone call.
What Home Electrical Work Costs in Portland
Nobody should agree to electrical work without knowing the range first. Here’s how our pricing works: Before any work begins, you’ll have a written estimate with material costs and fees itemized. For most projects, we can quote a min-max range over the phone. Complex projects get an in-person walkthrough, and remote-estimated projects get a personalized quote within 24 hours. Free, no obligation. Financing is available.
Small Service Work
(Outlet and switch repair, fixture installs, ceiling fans, dimmers): most jobs run
$200–$400+.
Lighting projects
(Recessed lighting, under-cabinet, exterior and landscape lighting). Depending on fixture count, ceiling access, and whether new circuits are needed.
$300-$1,000+
Remodel electrical
(Kitchen, bathroom, room additions). The biggest price drivers are the number of new circuits, whether walls are open during your remodel, and whether your panel has capacity for the new load.
$600-$3,000+
Whole-home rewiring
(Knob-and-tube or aluminum replacement), driven by square footage, attic and crawlspace access, and how much drywall we can avoid opening.
$3,000+

Remodel & Renovation Electrical
When you remodel a kitchen, bathroom, or whole floor, the room's electrical needs change with it: new appliances, new lighting, new layouts, and often wiring behind the walls that was never built for any of it. This is the service you need when a contractor says "walls are coming open" or an inspector says the existing wiring won't pass. We start with a load calculation, which means adding up what your remodeled space will draw so we know whether your panel can supply it, and we tell you the answer before drywall goes up, not after. Then we do the rough-in, the stage where circuits, boxes, and wiring are installed while the walls are open, including the dedicated circuits code requires for modern kitchens and baths (a dedicated circuit serves one appliance alone, so your microwave and your lights never compete). Where old wiring turns up, including knob-and-tube (the early-1900s method still hiding in many Portland homes) or aluminum branch wiring, we replace it while access is easy and cheap. After your contractor closes the walls, we return for finish work: devices, fixtures, and plates installed and every circuit tested. You end up with an inspected, labeled system sized for how the room will actually be used, and if we find a surprise behind the old walls, you hear about it with a price before it changes anything.
Lighting
Lighting projects are what you call us for when a room is dark in the wrong places, dated fixtures are dragging the space down, or your outdoor areas go black at sunset. We install recessed lighting (fixtures set flush into the ceiling for even, modern light with nothing hanging down), track and accent lighting, under-cabinet lighting for kitchen work surfaces, and exterior and landscape lighting using wet-rated fixtures, meaning equipment sealed and certified for direct Portland rain. Where a design adds real load, we run new circuits rather than overloading old ones, and we pair dimmers matched to your bulbs, because modern LED fixtures flicker or buzz on the wrong dimmer type and the fix is compatibility, not luck. You finish with every fixture installed, sealed where exterior, switched and dimmed the way you actually use the room, and tested before we leave.
Comfort, Convenience & Smart Home
This is the category for everything that makes a house work the way you live: ceiling fans, media rooms, reliable internet through the walls, and smart controls. Ceiling fans get mounted on fan-rated boxes, the reinforced mounting hardware built to hold a spinning fan, because a standard light-fixture box isn't, which is why DIY fans wobble. Home theater and network projects get low-voltage cabling (the separate class of wiring that carries data and audio rather than power) run cleanly through walls instead of stapled along baseboards. New appliances that need their own supply, like ranges, dryers, and shop equipment, get dedicated circuits sized to their specs. And smart home devices, switches, and automation get installed on wiring that can actually support them, since many smart switches require a neutral wire that older switch boxes lack, and we'll tell you which of yours do before you buy a houseful of hardware. Everything is tested, labeled, and demonstrated before we leave, and if your wiring can't support what you're planning, you hear it up front with options, not after the purchase.
Safety & Capacity
These are the invisible upgrades that protect the house and the people in it, and the ones inspectors, insurers, and buyers ask about. A whole-house surge protector installs at your panel and absorbs voltage spikes from the grid or nearby lightning before they reach your electronics, protecting everything at once instead of one power strip at a time. GFCI outlets (ground-fault circuit interrupters, the shock protection code requires in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoors) and AFCI breakers (arc-fault protection that detects the in-wall sparking that starts fires) bring older rooms up to the protection standard new homes are built with. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors get hardwired, meaning powered by your electrical system with battery backup and interconnected so an alarm anywhere sounds everywhere. Grounding work gives fault current a safe path out of your system, the quiet foundation everything else depends on. And when the real issue is capacity, we handle panel upgrades and service upgrades as their own clearly scoped projects. Each of these ends the same way: installed, tested with you watching, and explained, with anything else we noticed flagged honestly before it becomes an emergency.
Journeyman-Led, Not Subcontracted
Portland Metro Electric was founded in 2018 by David Tkach, a lead journeyman who completed a five-year apprenticeship, and our electricians are licensed journeymen who came up the same way. When we quote your job, the person doing the work is a licensed employee of our family-owned company, driving a fully stocked van, not a subcontractor you’ve never met.
We’re licensed in both Oregon (CCB# 249412) and Washington, bonded, and insured, and we work out of our Happy Valley office serving the entire Portland metro.
How It Works, Start to Finish
No mystery, no surprise invoice. Here’s exactly what happens when you call:
An electrician, not a call center, talks through your project. For most projects, we give you a minimum and maximum of what to expect to pay on that first call.
Simple projects get a personalized written estimate within 24 hours, no site visit needed. Complex projects (rewiring, remodels) get an in-person inspection and consultation first.
You pick the date and time. Your estimate itemizes material costs and fees. Once approved, we handle permits and order all materials.
You get a courtesy call before we arrive. When the work is done, we walk you through everything installed, showing how the new circuits, fixtures, or controls operate, and confirm you're satisfied before we leave.
Home Electrical Services FAQs
New circuits, panel work, and most remodel wiring require permits in the Portland metro; like-for-like fixture swaps often don’t. We confirm what applies to your address and pull the permits ourselves. It’s included in your itemized estimate.
Warning signs include two-prong ungrounded outlets, breakers that trip regularly, outlets warm to the touch, flickering when appliances start, and any home still running knob-and-tube or aluminum branch wiring. We can inspect and tell you honestly whether you need targeted repairs or a full rewire. They’re very different prices, and we quote both when it’s a judgment call.
Sometimes. It depends on your panel’s remaining capacity and breaker space. We check this during the estimate, and if an upgrade genuinely is needed, we’ll show you the load calculation rather than just telling you to spend more.
Single-room projects typically take one to a few days of electrical work, sequenced with your contractor. Whole-home rewiring usually runs longer depending on size and access. Your estimate includes a timeline specific to your project.
Yes. We can plan circuit layouts, lighting design, and load requirements with you (or your designer and contractor) before construction, then perform the installation and coordinate inspections.
Yes, flexible payment options are available for larger projects. Ask when you call or note it on the estimate form.

Get a Straight Answer and a Real Price, Free
Call now or fill out our form. An electrician will listen to what’s going on with your home, tell you what it will take, and, for most projects, give you a price range on the spot. Remote-estimated projects receive a personalized written quote within 24 hours. Free estimate, no obligation, financing available.
Unpermitted electrical work can void homeowner’s insurance claims and fails inspection when you sell. Our work is performed by licensed journeymen, permitted where required, and guaranteed to pass inspection. The cheaper quote often costs more when it has to be redone legally.
For rewiring, we plan routes through attics and crawlspaces first and open drywall only where there’s no alternative. Our customers regularly note in reviews how little we disturb to get the job done. During remodels, we coordinate with your contractor so wiring happens while walls are already open.
Almost always yes. Power interruptions are scheduled with you in advance and kept as short as possible.
Your work is backed by our satisfaction guarantee, and installed equipment carries its manufacturer’s warranty, which we honor.
